KENOSHA, Wis. — The Kenosha County District Attorney is expected to announce this afternoon whether the officer who shot Jacob Blake will face charges.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Kenosha police officers, including Rusten Sheskey, responded to the scene for a report of a “domestic incident.” When they were at the scene, officers tried to arrest Blake and used a Taser on him in a failed attempt to stop him. DOJ officials said Blake walked around his vehicle, opened the door and leaned forward. That’s when Sheskey held on to Blake’s shirt and shot him 7 times in the back.
The shooting sparked days of protests in Kenosha and around Wisconsin. Members of Blake’s family and other Kenosha community leaders renewed their calls for justice on Monday night. To this point, the Kenosha County District Attorney has not said whether charges will be filed against Sheskey or any of the other officers involved.
Gov. Tony Evers activated the National Guard to Kenosha on Monday in anticipation of the announcement. Authorities in Kenosha have also been bracing for more protests, regardless of what the decision is. Members of Blake’s family and community leaders have urged anyone protesting in Blake’s name not to destroy property or be violent.
The decision is expected to be announced during a 3 p.m. news conference. You can watch that live over the air on News 3 Now, on Channel3000+ streaming apps, Channel3000.com and on the Channel3000 Facebook page.
