LUFKIN, Texas — Two Portage residents were killed Sunday in a four-vehicle crash on a Texas highway.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened on U.S. Highway 59 roughly a half mile south of Lufkin, which is 120 miles northeast of Houston.
Two Portage residents, 33-year-old Alicia Stephenson and a 13-year-old who was traveling with her, were killed in the crash. Authorities said Stephenson was airlifted to a hospital in Houston for treatment where she later died. The 13-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Texas DPS officials said the crash happened when a Ford F-350 pickup truck’s tire blew out, causing it to cross the centerline into oncoming traffic. The truck collided with a Stephenson’s Dodge SUV before hitting a Honda and Ford F-150 truck.
The driver of the F-350 and her three children were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the F-150 was also hospitalized. The driver of the Honda was treated at the scene and released.
Authorities said they are still investigating the crash.
