FORT MCCOY (WKBT) — Several federal departments are working together to support the up to 22,000 refugees coming to Fort McCoy, as well as Fort Bliss in Texas and Fort Lee in Virginia.
That’s according to Fort McCoy Public Affairs Officer Tonya Townsell, who said Thursday that the Department of Defense and State Department are providing temporary housing and support to the Special Immigration Visa Applicants and their families.
The U.S. Northern Command will coordinate details with the State Department, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Health and Human Services, which have a joint effort to take care of the refugees.
Townsell said sheltering the refugees will not negatively affect military training, operations, readiness or other military missions, including those of the National Guard or Army Reserves.
The State Department will maintain responsibility for the well-being and support of Afghan Special Immigration Visa applicants and families at all times on the military installations.
The full details continue to be worked on. The federal government will provide an update as more information becomes available, according to Townsell.
