As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaches this weekend, Wisconsin veterans will gather in Milwaukee to discuss all that has transpired since that unforgettable day.
It is a week of reflection for many in the United States but especially those who have served this country in our armed forces.
Which is why the War Memorial Center is hosting a series of events—to help veterans reflect as one group.
“I was just talking with some of our mental health experts over the weekend and they knew this week they were going to see an uptick in calls and outreach because it’s top of mind,” explained President of the War Memorial Center, Dan Buttery.
With the way in which the United States departed Afghanistan, Buttery says now more than ever—those who have served need time to heal.
“This is going to get frustrating. So the fact that this is bothering you, means you care and then it’s a matter of how you deal with that. How do you channel that for positive results,” said Buttery.
A keynote speaker for this weekend’s reflection is retired Army Colonel, Chris Kolenda, who wants to help his fellow vets get through this difficult time.
“I want people to understand that your sacrifice is not in vain. Six of my soldiers were killed in action but no one can take away what we did over there,” shared Kolenda.
The series will start on September 9th with a discussion for veterans to talk about what went right, what went wrong and where America needs to go in the aftermath of The Forever War.
