EDGERTON, Wis. — For the fourth year in a row people in Edgerton are turned up to support Veteran Suicide and Prevention at Boomfest Saturday.
Boomfest is a fundraiser event hosted by veteran Chad Green which features, fireworks, vintage cars, race bikes, and even a bouncy house for kids raising money to prioritize the mental health of America’s veterans.
“I do things like this to bring everybody out and to feel good ,that’s the bottom line,” said Green. “Enough to maybe, you don’t want to go hurt yourself.”
The Desert Storm navy veteran said he personally has known veterans who have taken their own lives and for him that changed everything.
“Gotta have the community be able to reach out and know how to reach out and just ask them ‘hey are you feeling alright? Are you thinking about hurting yourself?” he said. “It’s ok to ask those questions, a lot of people don’t know that.”
The suicide rate among veterans in America is 1.5 times higher than that of non-veterans.
In 2019 an average of 71.2 veterans a day committed suicide.
