MADISON, Wis. — Five Wisconsin schools, including one in Dane County, have been named Green Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.
The schools were honored for their work in reducing their environmental impact, improving the health of students and staff members and teaching students about the environment and sustainability. Nationwide, 27 schools, five districts and four post-secondary institutions were honored this year.
Wisconsin schools that received the honor include:
- Escuela Verde, Milwaukee;
- A. E. Burdick School, Milwaukee Public Schools;
- Golda Meir School, Milwaukee Public Schools;
- Cambridge Elementary School, School District of Cambridge; and
- Washington Island School, Washington Island School District.
Cambridge Elementary received the honor thanks to its solar panel installation and projects supporting sustainability and environmental literacy.
“School leadership, staff, and students at these schools have worked together to provide safe and healthy environments that benefit learning and are good for our planet,” State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said in a news release. “Students today are passionate about sustainability. When we provide opportunities for students to engage in hands-on, place-based learning that supports personal, community, and planetary health, everybody wins.”
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was also honored. For a full list of honorees, click here.
