PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — Participants in a program designed to help people with disabilities gain and maintain employment took part in a graduation ceremony in Prairie du Sac on Wednesday morning.
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Sauk Prairie Health Center Project SEARCH held the ceremony, which featured the experiences of interns with physical and developmental disabilities preparing to enter the workforce.
“(The program) consists of three 10-week unpaid internships within the businesses, and the students learn job skills and they learn to develop all kinds of things (so) that they can become really good, productive workers in an integrated setting within their communities,” Liz Kennedy, who oversees the program, said.
Roughly 180 young adults at 25 sites across the state take part in Project SEARCH. Since getting started in 2008, the program has provided workforce training to nearly 1,500 residents.
