Groundbreaking marks start of construction on Oregon Culver’s

OREGON, Wis. — The groundbreaking for a fast-food restaurant usually doesn’t create significant fanfare, but the beginning of construction of a new Culver’s in Oregon is a big deal for the small community.

Village leaders and the quick service chain’s founder Craig Culver took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the restaurant’s future home at the corner of Park and Janesville streets on the village’s east side. The restaurant is set to open in March.

During Wednesday’s groundbreaking, Culver called Oregon a “good match” for a restaurant and praised village officials for their cooperation in helping the restaurant come to fruition.

“Many communities where we go, they aren’t easy to get along with — they aren’t — and they don’t treat us nearly this nice, but you guys have and I really want to say thank you for that,” Culver said.

Having Culver’s come to town is a “dream come true for the village,” Village President Randy Glysch said.

After the news of Culver’s opening was announced, community members set up a display showing their excitement for the burger and custard chain’s arrival. The dollhouse-sized “mini-Culver’s” restaurant captured residents’ attention, and soon, a line of toy cars formed in the “drive-thru.”

The display even has its own Facebook group with nearly 1,000 members.

“We thought, ‘Let’s paint up a box that looks like a Culver’s restaurant and see what happens,’” Oregon resident Dana Terrian, who set up the display, told News 3 Now last month. “This started maybe a little bit more than a month ago, and it’s just blown up.”

The toys placed at the “mini-Culver’s” will be donated to charity.

Founded in Sauk City in 1984, Culver’s has grown to more than 875 restaurants spanning 26 states.
