MADISON, Wis. — Saturday night on News 3 Now, a twisted and disturbing story that happened right here in southern Wisconsin gets a national audience.
The disappearance of Bart and Krista Halderson and the conviction of their son, Chandler, for their deaths, will be covered in this weekend’s episode of 48 Hours on CBS.

Telling that story means hearing from family, detectives, and a familiar face here on News 3 Now.
Adam Duxter, who worked for News 3 Now that summer before taking a job at CBS affiliate WCCO in Minneapolis, was one of the reporters who spoke with Chandler hours before he was arrested and was interviewed as part of the 48 Hours episode.
Over a Zoom call with News 3 Now reporter Kathryn Merck, Duxter said he remembers asking a lot of questions when Bart and Krista Halderson disappeared in July 2021.
“We knew that it wasn’t your typical story,” said Duxter. “It obviously got so much attention in Madison, and greater south central Wisconsin.”
News 3 Now provided CBS News with several hours of previous coverage and footage of the trial to help with the production of the episode. CBS News Producers and 48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty flew to Madison earlier this year to conduct the interviews for the piece.
The show interviewed Duxter extensively for the finished product.
“I think coming into it, I really wanted to stress and emphasize that for us in this community, it was something that hurt really bad,” said Duxter.
He’s not alone in feeling that way. Sheriff’s office public information officer Elise Schaffer says the agency did not take the decision to participate in the episode lightly and only agreed to do the show because the 48 Hours team said they would not include graphic details about the murders.

“They were extremely thorough in making sure that they stuck to the facts and are not going to sensationalize the case, which was one of our concerns going into this,” Schaffer said.
48 Hours‘ crew agreed and worked for months to pour over interviews, police reports, and hours of News 3 Now’s footage.
Duxter emphasized that even though he will be the one making an appearance on the show, a whole team of people at News 3 Now covered the case from the disappearance to his sentencing. Duxter said the work of everyone involved, including investigators, should be noted while watching the episode.
“This is not about me, it’s about our team,” said Duxter. “But at the end of the day, it’s about the Halderson family. There’s still people grieving.”
You can find News 3 Now and Channel 3000’s extensive coverage of the case here, including every minute of the trial, which included eight days of testimony.
The episode, which 48 Hours titled “The Snapchat Clue,” is scheduled to air Saturday, November 5 at 9 p.m. central time on CBS and will also stream on Paramount+. The episode will also be available online here after it airs.
