Testimony has begun in the trial against a Dubuque man accused of murdering his mother. 29-year-old Tyler Dazey is charged in Iowa District Court of Dubuque County with first-degree murder and animal abuse in relation to the Jan. 18 death of his mother, Jennifer Dazey, and her dog, Echo. The trial began Tuesday with an all-day jury selection process, and testimony began this morning after opening statements. Tyler Dazey chose to not physically appear for the trial. Defense attorneys maintained Tyler Dazey’s innocence and alleged during opening statements that investigators failed to follow up on leads or evidence that could have uncovered another suspect. In addition to opening statements, jurors also heard from three witnesses about the discovery of Jennifer Dazey’s body and the initial steps of the investigation into her death.
