The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public of scammers who are posing as law enforcement. According to an online announcement from the sheriff’s department, scammers are disguising their phone numbers as that of local law enforcement agencies and identifying themselves as such when calling potential victims. The scammers then tell citizens that they have missed jury duty or have unpaid fines and direct the victim to wire transfer money, the announcement states. The announcement states that the money appears to be going to an encrypted overseas account and is therefore difficult to recover. Authorities encourage citizens to not provide any information and hang up if they receive a phone call like this. Any fraud activity should be reported to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
