A fire destroyed a two-story house on Edison Street in Dubuque’s North End yesterday afternoon, displacing a family of nine. The fire, driven by windy conditions, had consumed a large portion of the house by the time firefighters arrived. None of the home’s residents were there at the time of the blaze. The family includes seven children. Reports say the family dog and four cats have not been located. Crews sprayed the neighboring houses, which had siding melted, but flames had not spread to those houses. Dubuque Fire had 19 personnel on the scene and was assisted by Dubuque Police, Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy and the Water Department, as well as Red Cross, which will assist the displaced residents. Key West Community Fire Department provided mutual aid backup to cover other calls in the city of Dubuque. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
