Michael Sheen Writes Off Over $1M Worth of Debt for 900 People Using His Own Money

Michael Sheen paid off $1.29 million in debt for 900 people using $129,000 of his own money through a debt acquisition company he set up in his native south Wales. This initiative is the subject of an upcoming documentary called Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway aimed at shedding light on the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by banks and finance companies. Sheen’s efforts come in the wake of a steelworks closure in the Port Talbot region, prompting widespread job losses, which has motivated him to champion the area through various philanthropic endeavors such as the self-financing of a new national theater to fill the gap left by the 2024 shutdown of National Theatre Wales.
