A walk-up self-service food pantry known in the Dubuque community as “Big Purple” has been taken down. The box was filled with food, books and other supplies daily that the community relied on. Set up 7 years ago, Big Purple was a place where anyone in need could “shop” for food and supplies – no questions asked. The rules were simple: Nothing too big for the box, cars had to park in designated spaces, and all items had to be donated and taken in good faith. However, people began taking advantage. Despite signs and social media posts, people continued leaving large items at the box, which had to be removed and disposed of. There were even multiple car accidents at the location. Then on Thursday, a volunteer’s phone was stolen. Renee Krier, owner of Romper Stompers said the box may not be gone forever. She’s exploring the possibility of relocating it.
