18-year-old leads authorities on vehicle chase through Marquette, Adams counties

ADAMS, Wis. — An 18-year-old is facing multiple charges after he allegedly led Adams County law enforcement on a vehicle chase early Tuesday morning.

Authorities with the Adams County Sheriff’s office said they were notified by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office around 2:15 a.m. that deputes in Marquette County had pulled over a man, 18-year-old Trace Russell, for a traffic stop when they found he was wanted on several charges out of Waushara County. Authorities said they believed Russell to be armed and dangerous.

Russell reportedly drove off from the traffic stop in Marquette County and entered Adams County traveling westbound on State Highway 82. Russell then turned onto County Highway G before heading west on County Highway A while traveling roughly 100 mph.

Adams County authorities deployed a spike strip that Russell was able to avoid, according to a news release.

Russell then continued westbound on County Highway A before reaching State Highway 13 where the pursuit continued. Deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office deployed another set of spike strips near State Highway 13 and County Highway J. Russell hit the spikes and continued driving on State Highway 13 at speeds of roughly 40 mph before he entered a ditch in the 1800 block of the highway.

The vehicle hit multiple trees before becoming wedged between two of them. Russell then got out of the vehicle and ran off, according to authorities.

Responding officers set up a perimeter and began canvassing the area. Shortly before 8 a.m., authorities spotted Russell leaving a residence in the 1100 block of Czech Drive.

Russell then ran into a nearby wooded area, and authorities set up another perimeter. According to the release, officials ordered Russell to surrender, which he ultimately did. He was in possession of a loaded handgun when authorities took him into custody.

Officials said Russell was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before he was booked into the Adams County Jail on charges of criminal trespass to a dwelling, burglary while armed, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, knowingly fleeing an officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Mauston Police Department, Town of Rome Police Department, City of Adams Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Authorities said their investigation is ongoing.
