LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area will gather donations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Onalaska American Legion for the Afghan allies and families who remain in Afghanistan.
“After almost 30 years in the community, Habitat for Humanity knows that people in the La Crosse area have BIG HEARTS! Whenever there is a call for help, the community responds. So when Afghan refugees began arriving at Fort McCoy, the community sprang into action gathering hygiene products, clothing, support, and services for the displaced,” said executive director Kahya Fox in a press release.
The Habitat for Heroes committee, which is made up of local veterans and other volunteers who help Habitat for Humanity build homes for veterans and their families, organized the event, Fox said.
“Local veterans and active military members were growing increasingly worried about our Afghan allies and their families who remained in Afghanistan. These are people who risked their lives for our troops and now face death every day they remain in Afghanistan,” she said.
The event will support two non-profits: No One Left Behind and Team America. Information from both organizations will be available at the event and lunch from BP Smokehouse will be available for $10. All of the proceeds will be split between the two charities.
