MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was charged Wednesday with sexual assault after his DNA matched with DNA from another rape kit.
Kevin McDowell is charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault by use of force and one count of kidnapping, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Authorities with the DOJ said DNA from a sexual assault kit tested after the allegations was also found while testing another rape kit as part of the Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.
“Cases like this highlight the importance of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative,” Attorney General Josh Kaul said. “Thank you to the investigators and prosecutors who are working to get justice for survivors of sexual assault.”
The investigation into McDowell was led by the DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation, Madison police, the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, and the Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative team with DOJ.
McDowell is being held on a $10,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 28.
