MADISON, Wis. — A decision by a Florida judge Monday meant that masks are not required on airplanes, but that didn’t mean the face coverings completely vanished overnight.
“I still have to do a lot of international travel for work,” Tom Pistohl said, his face shielded by a cloth that Americans have become all too familiar with. “I think every individual has to take the right precautions for themselves.

Pistohl and his son Trace landed in Madison on Tuesday after a flight from Los Angeles. Trace’s spring break is this week. Tom said that he was surprised to hear the federal mandate was repealed.
“We’ve been living with the mask mandate for a long time, but the world is opening up and I guess we’re getting back to a little bit of normal.”
Many travelers at Dane County Regional Airport did ditch their masks, the first time they were allowed to do so in two years.
“The general sentiment has been pretty positive,” spokesperson Michael Riechers said. “We want passengers to continue to do whatever they feel comfortable doing.”
The airport will continue to provide free masks, and travelers are welcome to wear a mask if they choose to. Riechers said the airport’s cleaning process, which was enhanced during the pandemic, will not be changing.
As for Trace Pistohl, whose vacation will include a Bucks game, Brewers game and lots of trips to Culver’s, masks are the last thing on his mind.
“I don’t really care.”
