FITCHBURG, Wis. — Fitchburg City Council President Randy Udell is running to be the city’s next mayor.
The move comes a day after Mayor Aaron Richardson announced he would not seek a third term. Richardson is running for State Treasurer but said he would leave his post regardless of the outcome of that election.

Udell, who was first elected to the City Council in 2020, announced his candidacy for mayor at a press conference on Tuesday.
“Fitchburg is a thriving, dynamic community,” Udell said. “The next Mayor will need to build on the strengths of this City and be prepared to lead Fitchburg through the challenges we will face.”
Udell was elected to be Council President in 2021 and reelected this year. He is also the elected treasurer of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. He earned his undergraduate degree from UW-Whitewater and worked as an engineer for AT&T before retiring.
