VIROQUA, Wis. (WKBT) — Gov. Tony Evers and new Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez met with students at Viroqua Elementary School Thursday as part of a statewide tour.
The visit was one of Rodriguez’s first as lieutenant governor.
Viroqua Elementary School was one of many Wisconsin schools to receive additional funding through a successful referendum during last fall’s election.
Although 80% of state school referendums passed, Lt. Gov. Rodriguez says she and Gov. Evers will continue to address school funding.
“We want to make sure the schools have the resources they need to fund any program or anything they would need for the kids here,” said Lt. Gov. Rodriguez.
According to Viroqua’s superintendent, a Wisconsin governor hasn’t visited a school in that district in decades.
Rural schools may not get as much attention as urban schools, but Gov. Evers says they need equal support.
“We have a special program for rural schools,” said Gov. Evers. “It’s called the Sparsity [Aid] Program, it’s been around a long time, that helps them get through the budget struggles.”
Gov. Evers and Lt. Gov. Rodriguez also visited schools in Menomonie and Stevens Point Thursday.
