On Saturday at about 12:30am, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call in regard to a crash on Highway 18 near Brown School Road, east of Fennimore in which the driver of a vehicle was injured. Upon investigation, the deputy found that 49-year-old Walter Leffler of rural Fennimore, was traveling west on Highway 18, when his vehicle left the road to the north side of the highway, drove along the shoulder for some distance before crossing back on to the road. The vehicle then left the road, struck a culvert at a field entrance on the south side of the highway, crossing that driveway, and striking an embankment. At some point, Leffler was ejected from the vehicle and he appeared to have landed about 20 feet from where the car came to rest. Leffler had serious injuries to his lower extremities and was taken to Grant Regional Health Center for treatment of his injuries where he was transported by med-flight. The deputy determined that Leffler had been drinking alcohol and a legal blood draw was performed. The crash is still under investigation. Citations regarding the crash will be issued as the crash investigation progresses. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fennimore Fire Department, Fennimore EMS, the Fennimore Police Department, and Doan’s Towing of Fennimore.
