Authorities say one person was seriously injured early Sunday morning in a one-vehicle crash near Galena. A man suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics for further treatment of his injuries. A release from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department does not identify the individual who was injured, though it states he was one of three passengers in a car driven by 29-year-old Erick Marcelino-Cruz, of Arkansas. The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday along U.S. Highway 20 near its intersection with Williams Drive. The release states that Marcelino-Cruz was traveling west on U.S. Highway 20 when he failed to appropriately reduce his speed while navigating a turn and exited the roadway. A backseat passenger sustained significant injuries, while Marcelino-Cruz and the other two passengers were evaluated and released at the scene.
Marcelino-Cruz was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
