An Illinois man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of a young Dubuque resident. 32 year old Keywani Evans of Freeport received the mandatory sentence Monday at the Dubuque County Courthouse after previously being found guilty of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the death of 20-year-old Taiwon Jackson Jr., of Dubuque. Evans was convicted of shooting Jackson three times in the head at a June 4, 2022, gathering in Dubuque. Reports say the two men did not know each other prior to that day, and evidence presented at trial showed Evans fired the first shot into the base of Jackson’s skull. Evans’ trial began May 14, and jurors returned the guilty verdict on May 22 after a trial filled with testimony from more than two dozen witnesses.
