Dubuque council decides to keep 1-way traffic on Central Avenue, White Street

The Dubuque City Council this week decided unanimously against putting two-way traffic on Central Avenue and White Street, instead adopting a preferred alternative that preserves the status quo while removing parking and possibly adding a cycle track. The plan maintains efforts to calm traffic and rejuvenate the corridor by narrowing the lanes on Central from 14 to 11 feet and removing parking from one side, allowing for wider sidewalks and tree plantings. On White Street, the “multi-modal alternative” would remove street parking from one side and replace it with a widened sidewalk featuring a two-way bicycle track separated from traffic. About 65% of people responding to surveys by civil engineering firm Bolton & Menk supported the preferred alternative that maintains one-way traffic on both streets over the two-way alternative and two other proposals.
