A teacher and a teenage student are dead after a shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. The suspected shooter is also dead. The shooting was reported just before 11 a.m. at the school. Five other people were injured, with two of the injured considered life-threatening. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said his department believes the shooter was a teenage student at the school and used a handgun. Federal and local investigators are still working to determine the timeline of events and the suspect’s motive.
A Madison Metropolitan School District spokesperson said nine district schools were put on secure hold due to the shooting. That hold was lifted at 1:15 p.m. Madison Metropolitan School District classes will continue as scheduled Tuesday. President Biden and Gov. Tony Evers both have been briefed on the situation. Governor Evers also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff beginning immediately until sunset on Sunday out of respect for the victims of the shooting.
