The Dubuque County Watersheds announced the return of its innovative cover crop seeding program for its second year. The program provides farmers an opportunity to explore cover cropping practices that enhance soil health, prevent erosion, and promote farm profitability. Various cover crop seed mixes are available for participants to select from including Rye, Oats, Premium Cover Crop Mix, and Winter-Kill Multi-Species; all of which are designed to boost a field’s long-term productivity. Last year, the program had 9,000 acres signed up and this year they’ve doubled the acre allocation to more than 15,000. All farmers enrolled in our cover crop program must be a member of Dubuque County farmer to farmer. Seeding will be completed via drone or custom drilling between August 1st-October 15th. Farmers interested in signing up can contact Dubuque County Watersheds Conservation Agronomist Scott Hendricks at 563-213-8388.
