A Chicago man was sentenced to more than two years in federal prison for distributing drugs near a Dubuque college. 27-year-old Willie Smith recently received the 33-month prison sentence in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids after previously pleading guilty to one count of distribution of heroin within 1,000 feet of a college and one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin within 1,000 feet of a college. A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa states that Smith admitted to working with others to sell the drugs out of a home near Loras College in 2017 and 2018. Per the sentence from U.S. District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams, Smith must also serve six years of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
