MADISON, Wis. — UW-Madison Police say a man was found dead in Lake Mendota about 15 feet off a pier at the Memorial Union Friday morning.
UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott says a passerby found the person floating in the water and called 911 at about 6:10 a.m. Friday. UWPD and Madison Police quickly responded to the scene and determined the person was dead.
Lovicott says investigators are still working to identify the person and determine when and why they went into the water, but they do not believe there is a danger to the rest of campus.
“When we hear of an incident, we get out here quickly and assess, figure out what’s going on, and very quickly we were able to determine that there wasn’t a general overall threat to campus. This was an isolated individual involved in this,” Lovicott said.
At this point, Lovicott said they do not suspect foul play. The Dane County Medical Examiner is now investigating and trying to identify the man.
Investigators remained on the scene for a couple of hours Friday morning, trying to piece together what they could.
“We’re just looking for any clues,” Lovicott said. “We’re looking for anything that might help us identify this individual and why they went into the water.”
Officials said they may have an update later in the day Friday, but it may take some time for the medical examiner to identify the person who died.
This is a developing story and will be updated when information is made available.
